The course comprises 4 units of study and will run for one year as follows:- Unit 1 Design - Learners will experiment with the principles of design, the use of colour, line, shape, form and texture and will demonstrate how design can be used for individualized outcomes to good effect. Unit 2 - Sampling - This unit is all about the practice of the skills. Students will use appropriate tools and materials to experiment and explore both traditional and non-traditional methods, tools and materials by sampling to create the required finish. Unit 3 - Item of Hand Embroidery, students will design and make a panel, cushion or similar item predominantly stitching by hand. Any construction is permissible by machine. Unit 4 - Item of Machinery Embroidery students will design and make a panel, cushion or similar item predominantly stitching by machine. Assessment takes place throughout the course by the tutor, internal verification and by City and Guilds external verifier. Level 2 Certificate will be awarded with a pass, merit or distinction.Course delivery will be both practical and theory. There will be a combination of lectures, demonstrations and discussions with as much practical activity as possible, making this course as 'hands on' as possible. The college has some sewing machines available for individual use, basic art supplies for design work and a small departmental library of relevant books. Students are responsible for providing equipment and materials as required. Cost varies depending on the project that the students' choose. FIRST CLASS - students should bring a selection of black threads of varying thickness and hand stitching needles, black pens and pencils, notebook and pen.
