Poor practice in relation to the administration of medicines can lead to serious errors being made and ultimately cause injury to people using health and social care services. Therefore, it's essential that care staff understand procedures for handling medicines safely and that they follow safe practice guidelines when dealing with medicine administration. The qualification aims to develop learners' knowledge of the safe handling of medicines within a health and social care context. It provides an introduction to the various medicines learners are likely to encounter in a work environment, covering how medication is supplied and administered, and the possible side effects. The programme explores the procedures for obtaining, storing and disposing of medicines and the legislation surrounding these three areas. It also emphasises the importance of the audit process and issues surrounding responsibility, accountability and confidentiality. The qualification is mapped to aspects of the knowledge outcomes for Clinical Health Skills and Health and Social Care National Occupational Standards. It is also mapped to the Skills for Care knowledge set for medication and may contribute towards parts of the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework. As a distance learning course, this programme can be completed at times and locations suited to the learner, making it perfect for those who may have irregular working hours and for whom attending college on a regular basis would be difficult. By working through this programme, learners will develop an understanding of their responsibilities in the workplace and the procedures they should follow when handling medicines. This will help to protect against common errors in relation to medicines and support safe working practices.
