AS/A Level French

UPDATED 20150903 13:13:19

France is a central member of Europe and is the third most important business partner with Britain. French is the official language of 23 different countries and is spoken by over 220 million people across the world. By studying French you will not only increase your practical knowledge of foreign languages, but also your understanding of European and world culture. You will develop strong communication and analytical skills that will be invaluable in your studies and will give you the edge in your future career. Students' quotes: Jess M, Sheffield University 2004-2008 “I've had a great opportunity to use my languages in all of the roles I've had since graduating, and in every case it was my language skills that gave me an edge over other applicants for the same role.” Charlie R Exeter University 2010-2014 “My first year was so easy because Brock had prepared me so well compared to others.” On the AS/A2 course you will develop your writing, speaking, reading and listening skills by studying a wide range of topics related to French culture and society. In your second year you will choose to study either a film, a book or a region of France which would usually link to other A Level subjects or area of personal interest. There is also a significant emphasis on the study of French grammar. Your speaking, listening, reading and writing will develop to a high level in this most popular foreign language. French is used, as far as possible, in class and there are compulsory weekly conversation sessions with a native French speaker. Modern France and connected topics form part of the course, and a work placement in France is offered each year. Assessment is by listening, reading, writing and oral examination for AS, listening, reading, writing and oral examination for A2.
