AS/A Level Drama and Theatre Studies

UPDATED 20150903 13:13:19

The A Level Drama course offers students the chance of working with experienced lecturers, professionally trained as actors and writers who trained at top institutions. You will develop practical skills and study playwrights and plays. There are also regular trips to the theatre and workshops run by visiting practitioners. In the 2nd Year there is an optional residential trip abroad to study aspects of the Performing Arts Industry. As well as performance and research skills, the course allows you to develop team building and self-discipline skills. The course is hugely popular with students wishing to pursue a career in the Theatre or as a 3rd or 4th A Level option for those students who are hoping to go to university to study the more traditional subjects. You will learn about acting, directing, theatre design and play analysis. You will devise your own work from a stimulus. You will perform the work of playwrights. You will explore plays both theoretically and practically. You will learn about design elements and their function within a production. You will develop an understanding of Dramatic Theory & the work of major practitioners. This is an exciting blend of both theory and practical learning for those with a strong interest in theatre and how it works. You will study modern theatre practitioners and a range of play texts from both the twentieth century and earlier and develop your critical eye through the numerous theatre visits which the group makes. We are always keen for you to learn theory through practice, so that your written work is relevant and informed. Our aim is to develop you as both an individual and team player throughout the course - skills which are valuable whichever career you hope to pursue. Course assessment consists of practical and written examinations.
