Music GCEA

UPDATED 20150827 11:34:11

Why choose Music? This course is based around a variety of musical styles, and is designed for students who enjoy music and want to develop their skills in performing, composing, listening and analysing. Students can pursue their preferred style in performing and free composition, while much of the written work is based around classical music. There are lots of opportunities to play and sing in orchestras, jazz bands, choirs and chamber groups. A level Music has three units: Performing (solo recital of 5-6 minutes at Grade 5 level or above); Composing (one three-minute composition in your own style in response to a chosen brief); Developing Musical Understanding (written paper on set works, listening tests and harmony exercises) How will I learn? Listening, composing, harmony, set works and music history are covered by traditional lessons, practical work and discussions. A level performance programmes are prepared in collaboration with instrumental/vocal teachers, in workshops and lunchtime concerts. Students are also invited to perform in master classes with visiting specialists. All music students' play and sing in at least one band, orchestra or choir, and are encouraged to attend live concerts in trips arranged by the department. How will I be assessed? Performing: performances are recorded, internally assessed and externally moderated. Composing: all composing is coursework, monitored by teachers and externally assessed. Musical Understanding: assessed by means of written examination. What qualifications do I need to take the course? Grade 5 or above in at least one instrument. You will need the ability to read music scores confidently and therefore we prefer students to have passed Grade 5 Theory. If you do not have this qualification you may be asked to audition prior to the course starting and take an extra theory class.
