Machine embroidery

During the course you will be introduced to many creative machine embroidery techniques and be shown the exciting possibilities that this process will achieve! You will be exploring machine embroidery, from learning how to work with the basic free machining to more advanced methods. Each week you will be discovering exciting techniques which incorporate fabric and paper while learning how to produce creative results with the sewing machine. There will be demonstrations and step by step guidance from your tutor to help you build a portfolio of embroidered samples and knowledge. This course will focus on the basic methods while gradually building your confidence with your machine. By the end of the course you can expect to be able to do the following: •Understand the potential of the sewing machine and its use as a creative tool. •Work creatively with fabric, paper and stitch. •Produce machine embroidered embellished surfaces. •Create a final piece of machine embroidery which incorporates your favourite embroidery techniques.

Entry requirements

To begin with – pictures to work from and inspire you, sewing machine (manual preferably, rather than digital as the course will focus on free machine embroidery), machine and hand threads, remnants of fabrics, plain fabrics, sheer fabrics – organzas/nets/chiffons, dressmakers pins, had and machine needles, sharp fabric scissors, embroidery hoop – small/medium or whatever you have, anyother bits and bobs you might want to work with. Your tutor will advise you of other things you will need to bring during the course. The Gateway has very few of its own sewing machines, so it would be advisable to bring your own. Reception may be able to advise you on this matter if necessary.
