What was everyday life like 500, 600 or even 900 years ago? Were the forests full of ‘Robin Hoods’ and the towns full of ‘Dick Whittingtons’? Part II of this course on Medieval England will focus on daily life. We will consider what towns were like, how people traded and travelled and how they dealt with illness. We will explore the ‘Black Death’, which may have killed half the population, and assess its causes and consequences. We will also look at law and order, the legend of Robin Hood and the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381. The course will examine the experiences of family life and especially those of women and children. Finally, medieval food, fashion and fun will be explored.
