Sustainable Horticulture City & Guilds (NPTC) Diploma Level 2 (Occombe Farm, Devon)

The course runs from October until June over 3 days a week, 10am - 3.30pm. The course is a combination of practical horticulture and written assignments, and teaching takes place at Occombe Farm Organic Gardens (Paignton) in the community market garden, forest garden, polytunnels, conservation areas and nearby horticultural businesses. Ideal if: you would like to know more about how to meet the increasing demand for sustainable produce in an oil-scarce world. You'll need: at least three GCSEs at grade D or above, or a relevant qualification. You'll learn: from a variety of units giving you a broad range of knowledge about the principles of plant and soil science, techniques in organic horticulture, identification of plants, and experience in land-based industries. Expect: your assignments and projects to be assessed throughout the course. You'll love: working at the renowned Occombe Farm, a low-carbon, organic, market garden. You'll go onto employment or further study at level 3 on our Sustainable Horticulture (Occombe) Diploma. Who is this course for? This Level 2 qualification is a one year course for those wishing to gain essential practical skills, knowledge and understanding in horticulture which could be your stepping stone into an interesting, diverse and immensely satisfying career in the horticulture industry. There will be a focus on learning to sustain the health of soils, ecosystems and people in a potential future when fossil fuel products and energy may be scarce and extreme weather events more frequent. It will involve a mixture of theory sessions with 'hands on' practical application. It is recommended for both school leavers and mature students.
