Practical Horticulture Skills City & Guilds Certificate Level 1

This course is offered at various sites across Cornwall and Devon. Occombe Farm, Paignton, South Devon. The course is centred around sustainable production of a range of food crops where you will cover all aspects of production under cover (Polytunnels), in raised beds and outdoor production. Duchy College,Rosewarne (Green Fingers) where you will work within the extensive grounds, glasshouses and polytunnels and the Nursery and within the local community. Heaven Scent, Wheel Martyn, St Austell within the Nursery and surrounding grounds. Ideal if: you would like to improve your horticultural skills and knowledge, whilst gaining a nationally-recognised qualification. You'll need: at least a GCSE at grade E or above in English and Mathematics, or an equivalent qualification. You will also need to have a keen interest in gardening and the environment. You'll learn: about propagation, establishing plants, identification of plants, care and maintenance of plants, understanding the growing environment for plants and an introduction to common pests, diseases and their control. Expect: your assignments and projects to be assessed throughout the course, and of course to get your hands dirty! You'll love: learning about all aspects of production including polytunnels, raised beds and outdoors. You'll go onto: a Level 2 Horticulture Apprenticeship or Diploma in which there is the opportunity to specialise in a particular area of horticulture if you so wish.
