Henry VIII is one of Britain’s most famous monarchs. But why? Is it due to Holbein’s renowned portrait of him, or the fact that he had six wives, two of whom, he beheaded? Did his actions change Britain, and even for world, for ever? In this course, we shall consider these questions and other aspects of his life. We shall study the childhood of the young Prince Henry. We shall explore his ambitions, his successes and the challenges that he faced in the early years of his reign. The course will focus on his relationship with Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn, the King’s ‘Great Matter’ and his decision to break with the Church in Rome and establish the Church of England. The causes, course and consequences of both the Dissolution of Monasteries and the Pilgrimage of Grace will also be studied. Henry had many famous advisers including Wolsey, Cromwell and Cranmer and we shall explore his relationship with these men and with his other wives and with his children. We shall also consider what life was like in his Court. Finally, we shall evaluate the importance of his reign.
