GCE AS Level in History

UPDATED 20150814 11:31:26

History builds upon and develops the knowledge and skills that you will have gained through your GCSE History course. The options that we have chosen give students a taste of both modern and early modern history, which is especially useful to those students considering studying the subject at university, but also gives all students an excellent foundation into why Britain and the world is as it is today. Therefore, although many students do choose to study History at university, many other students find it an extremely useful preparation for courses in subjects like Politics, International Relations, Law, other humanities subjects, languages and even medicine and the sciences. Unit 1: The Tudors – England, 1485-1603 (40% of A-Level) This unit is assessed by an external examination at the end of the two year course. In Year 12, students will study the “Consolidation of the Tudor Dynasty: England, 1485-1547” and in Year 13 they will build upon this understanding of England at this time and consider how stable England was in the “Turmoil and Triumph: England 1547-1603” section of Unit 1. Unit 2: Revolution and Dictatorship: Russia and the Soviet Union, 1917-1954 (40% of A-Level) This unit is also assessed by an external examination at the end of the two year course. In Year 12, students will study the “Russian Revolution and the Rise of Stalin” and in Year 13 they will build upon this understanding of Russia and the Soviet Union to then assess the impact of “Stalin’s Rule, 1929-1953”. The AQA AS History course does run in parallel to the AQA A2 History course. If students sit an AS exam at the end of their first year, they will answer questions on the “Consolidation of the Tudor Dynasty: 1485-1547” for Unit 1 and they will answer questions on the “Russian Revolution and the Rise of Stalin” for Unit 2. Both of these will be externally assessed and there is no coursework for AS.
