There are five core units in the first year of Physics: all five will be can be sat for the AS level, at the end of the first year of study, and for the students going on to do A Level there are an addition four core units and one optional unit all to be sat at the end of the A level course. Both assessments involve no formal coursework, just a core set of qualitatively assessed practicals and examinations at the end of the respective course. AS Examinations (AS Award 7407) There are five core topics which are studied 1. Measurements and their errors 2. Particles and radiation 3. Waves 4. Mechanics & Materials 5. Electricity A level Examinations (Award 7408) There are three core topics which are studied in addition to the AS topics 6. Further mechanics and thermal physics 7. Fields and their consequences 8. Nuclear physics There is then one additional optical topic to be chosen out of the five below 9. Astrophysics 10.Medical physics 11.Engineering physics 12.Turning points in physics 13.Electronics
