The BTEC National is an advanced level IT course which involves the theoretical and practical study of both computer and IT related topics. The course content is equally suited to both male and female students due to its diverse programme of study. The content of the course is a combination of the AS/A2 IT, Computing and Applied IT courses. Students can enjoy studying a range of interesting IT related topics and learn a range of different software including the Adobe Master Collection as well as traditional Microsoft applications along with business related topics.An outline of Subsidiary Diploma topics are listed below and those marked with an asterisk are the 3 topics which will be studied in the first year to achieve the Certificate:Communication and Employability Skills: This unit provides an opportunity for students to understand the range of such non-technical soft skills and to appreciate what other skills and knowledge they will need to develop in order to be an effective employee. By the end of the unit, students will have had opportunity to identify and consider their own set of skills and, where necessary, improve them.Computer Systems: Most IT practitioners will at some stage have to set up, use, customise and maintain a computer system or systems. In order to do so effectively they will need to understand the components that make up a computer system. The operating system interacts with the hardware components in order to make a functioning machine. As this relationship is so close, this unit develops skills in hardware components and the operating systems. Although the Microsoft operating system currently dominates the market, it is not the only operating system and students should explore at least one other.e-Commerce: The unit starts by looking at the technologies needed to operate e-commerce, ie the hardware, software and networking required for an e-commerce system to be implemented.
