Level and Exam Board AQA A Level Why choose Sociology? Spanning the boundary between science and arts, Sociology is useful for students wishing to progress to many higher education courses from medicine to philosophy and literature. It is also an asset in business, management, education and many other fields of employment requiring an understanding of human relationships and experience, especially careers like marketing, advertising, PR, journalism, law and teaching. What does the course involve? Sociology is about people. It helps students gain a wider knowledge and understanding of the society in which they live. As members of society all students should come to the course equipped with some knowledge of the social world. Sociology will help students develop a deeper understanding of that world and explain issues that directly affect the way they live. In the first year, students study a range of topics relating to the changing nature of Families and Households, as well as on the history and purpose of Education. For the second year, there are also two units. In unit 1 we address how the Mass Media influences our lives and in unit 2 we explore the nature of Crime and Deviance and its implications for society.
