Across the Divide-From Victorian to Modern

Using novels as our main guide , the dramatic change in the social and political ideas of the late nineteenth century through to the 'thirties will be discussed. A specific focus will be how the class system is reflected in the literature and reading habits of the time. The course will start with a study of 'Middlemarch' by George Eliot as an example of the high point of Victorian fiction. Other core texts are , 'Sons and Lovers ' by Lawrence, 'Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man ' by Joyce and 'Passage to India ' by Forster.
