Early Renaissance Painting in Europe 1305-1519: Love and Measurement

UPDATED 20150805 17:34:36

The course uses selected examples of early Renaissance painting in Europe from the period 1305-1519, from the mature work of Giotto to that of Leonardo da Vinci. The course would suit those taking an interest in the period of the European Renaissance for the first time and also provide the opportunity to close-read selected paintings for those wishing to refine and develop their understanding and viewing skills. The course uses a selected number of paintings, mainly from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; these will provide a basis for the beginnings of an appreciation and understanding of some of the seminal ideas in aesthetics and philosophy of the period. The selection will encourage a focus on the paintings with themes and attentions of love snd measurement; from the early use of artificial perspective and proportions to involvement in a world that represents a complexity of thought with feelings and emotions. The course would benefit those looking for an introduction to Renaissance art, as much as those who have already participated in previous WEA courses in the subject.
