Following on from the Autumn term course on Naturalism and the Birth of Modern Drama, this course looks at playwrights who were influenced by Ibsen, Strindberg and Chekhov and traces the development of Modern Drama in Europe and America in the first half of the 20th century. Considering plays by Eugene O'Neill, Tennessee Williams, Luigi Pirandello, Samuel Beckett, Arthur Miller and Harold Pinter, we will attempt to locate them in a continuum of dramatic expression as well as locating them in their specific times. This investigation will be supported through a consideration of the philosophies of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus.
