This course looks at three playwrights of the nineteenth and early twentieth century who have exerted considerable influence on modern drama: Ibsen (Norway, 1828-1906), Strindberg (Sweden, 1849-1912) and Chekhov (Russia, 1860-1904). Through an analysis of the dramatic works of these playwrights we will explore the wider movement of European Naturalism, supporting our investigations through the study of a number of contemporaneous prose writers.
