English Literature: The Child in Nineteenth Century  Literature

UPDATED 20150805 17:14:48

The nineteenth century formed modern attitudes towards children. Some critics even say childhood was invented in the nineteenth century. This inclusive and interactive course will study texts written from the point of view of the child as well as literature for children. In addition to studying enlightened and progressive views of children we will look at repressive attitudes and cautionary tales designed to frighten children into silent obedience
