This course will raise awareness and appreciation of art through history. Starting with Neolithic cave art we will look at the theories behind its origin and explore how it may still have relevance in today's world. Moving on to the Italian masters, we will look at the techniques that made them revered throughout the centuries. We then consider the art of dramatic lighting effects used by Caravaggio. Moving towards the 19th Century, we discuss the 'Romantic' period and the techniques used by Constable - including composition and depth. The final week gives an overview of the Impressionistic period that changed the art world. Learners will not only learn the techniques that these artists used, but each week, they will be shown how to paint like them.
