This course will cover the lives, achievements and significance of selected local and regional individuals and the context in which they are to be regarded. Although called Local Heroes we will encounter some individuals of rather questionable morality and achievements on the way. The wider academic purpose of the course is to raise issues of more general historical significance. The selected individuals will offer an entry point into wider themes eg. Lola Montez and the 1848 Revolutions, Josephine Butler and Victorian morality. In some cases they afford an opportunity to review the mechanics of mythologisation eg. Jack Crawford and Camperdown, Grace Darling.
