This is not a course concerned with architectural history but rather an appreciation of the ways in which old buildings can reflect the character and growth of Newcastle at different stages in its development. In this sense it is a course in Urban History. Beginning with an appreciation of the site/function/design of the chosen buildings and the context in which they were built, the course gives a focus to the theme 'change over time' and the ways in which this might be detected in the fabric of buildings as well as the documentary sources available to study them. Particular buildings have been chosen for their chronological range and the ways in which they reflect different functions and building 'types'.
