Through the exploration of two areas of study, candidates will develop and understand how sounds are organised. There will be one set musical work for each of the AS and A2 years. There is a choice of topics including, amongst others, Musical Theatre, British Popular Music from 1960 and Four Decades of Jazz and Blues. Students in each year of the course will have a choice of free composition, compositional techniques or arranging to a brief provided by the exam board. For AS students, the arranging brief is based on a folk song and for A2 is in a rock, pop or jazz style. AS candidates will offer two performances chosen from solo, ensemble or ones that are technology-based. For A2, candidates are required to present a 10-15 minute programme using acoustic instruments and/or music technology.
