Sociologists are interested in examining the distribution of power in society and how this leads to inequalities e.g. class, gender, ethnicity and age differences in issues such as educational achievement and life expectancy. You will explore such questions from a variety of perspectives and be encouraged to think critically. There will be a relatively high level of essay writing, especially at A-level, it is therefore important to have good writing skills, although you will be supported with this. Sociologists conduct research to develop their theories, this is an important aspect of the course and you will have the opportunity to carry out several pieces of small-scale research. While the majority of the course is focused on contemporary UK society, you will be encouraged to consider the impact of globalisation.
