The AS course lasts one year (Yr 12) and is worth 50% of a full A level and can be a stand alone qualification. The course builds on some of the topics studied at GCSE and introduces others, further developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. The emphasis throughout the course is on communicating confidently and accurately in the foreign language and the use of contemporary authentic materials including the internet. Various resources will be suggested by your teacher. You will study two units and be assessed on your oral skills in a general conversation and an examiner-led discussion on topics studied during the course (20%) and on your listening, reading and writing skills (30%). The A2 course lasts a further year (Yr 13) and again is divided into two units worth a further 50% of the A level (oral 20% and listening, reading and writing 30%). Further topics are introduced to provide a context for study of the language in further depth. The oral and essay tasks are based on the study of films, including: La haine, Les Choristes and Au revoir les enfants.
