This subject covers various aspects of our physical health and well-being, along with a study of psychological aspects of health. In year 12 the course covers a number of chronic and acute health conditions such as diabetes, leukaemia and coronary heart disease. Students will learn about causes and treatment, what patients can expect in terms of care pathways and the possible impacts of their illness on their lifestyle. Students will also learn how health and social care settings provide all the life quality factors and caring skills needed to ensure their clients are provided with a good quality of life. Communication skills between clients and providers are also explored. In year 13 students build on their existing knowledge and investigate different health and social care sector job roles. They will study job progression, status and satisfaction amongst many other factors. They have the opportunity to interview individuals with jobs within the sector, and then reflect on their own suitability for such employment. They also study diagnostic techniques such as MRI and CT scanning, ultrasound scanning and X rays. They will investigate the rationale and success of health intervention strategies such as the childhood immunisation programme. Students who study this course are often part of our medical package, providing students with valuable and relevant access to health professionals both at school and elsewhere.
