The subject is taught in a purpose-built open studio – giving ample space for large-scale production as well as fine small-scale work on the industry spec MACs and PCs. Facilities for relief and screen printing, air-brushing and photography are all in-house and additional 3D needs are served by the Design Technology Department. Graphic Communication conveys information and ideas through visual means within a set of constraints. The increase in the use of information technology has led to changes in working practices and new ways of both communicating and presenting information. Students will develop: • a knowledge and understanding of design briefs, clients and audience; • an understanding of formal elements, techniques and their application to selected media; • an understanding through the application of a combination of knowledge and skills working within the constraints of a design brief; • a range of approaches to working with images, signs, symbols and text, an understanding of observation, analysis, communication and imagination; • an understanding of conventions and genres, such as figurative, abstract and symbolic; • an understanding of role and function; • an understanding of pictorial space, composition, rhythm, scale and structure; • of formal elements, such as colour, tone, texture, shape and form; • an ability to present a personal response showing connections with the work of others.
