Drama is focused on the ways in which we create and develop outstanding theatre, whether working with scripts or devising original performance material. Theatre Studies focuses on the analysis of plays and productions and considers how they create meaning for audiences and contribute to shaping our world. For you this means that throughout the course you will devise, perform scripted pieces, read plays, analyse live theatre productions and develop your performance skills as well as articulate your understanding of the many features of theatre practice. Throughout the course you will develop a deep understanding of effective theatre practice which will be assessed both practically and in writing. In your first year your work will be focused on play texts in a variety of styles and from a range of different time periods – you will perform a scripted extract and analyse two plays in your written exam. In second year you will study two further texts for your exam and your practical assessment will involve devising an original piece of theatre.
