History (AS Level)

UPDATED 20150723 09:24:46

The History course covers European and British history, as well as offering an opportunity to study both modern and early modern courses. The History AS Level is a stand-alone course and cannot be carried through to A2. The History AS Level is centred upon notions of leadership and dramatic change. The Tudor syllabus covers the reign of Elizabeth I with a focus upon the leadership challenges she faced during this fascinating and significant period of British and European history. We look at Elizabeth’s personality and family background in sophisticated detail in an attempt to establish whether or not she, and the Tudors, were well-suited to dealing with the religious divisions, wars, plots, rebellions and personality clashes that were raging across Europe at the time. Students also complete a challenging, in-depth study of Weimar, Nazi and Post-War Germany, which includes the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party, the Nazi Party’s consolidation of power, the legacy they left after the disastrous events of World War Two and the way in which Germany recovered after the War in the shadow of Stalinist Russia.
