Cardinal Newman has a well-equipped and thriving Music Department, with fantastic facilities and enrichment opportunities. If you are interested in analysing music from a variety of different styles, developing more of an in-depth knowledge of music theory, as well as improving performance skills, then A Level Music could be for you. As part of your first year, you will analyse a Classical orchestral work (1750-1820) in depth, using a score/theory analysis and historical knowledge. You will also analyse 12 tracks from the British Popular Music repertoire from 1960s-present day. You will also will study the theory behind harmony and create a 4-part harmony exercise. As well as presenting at least 5 minutes of solo performance work on your first study instrument with accompaniment, and a further 5 minutes in an ensemble (of 3 or more people) or as a soloist on a second study instrument.
