Gemstone Setting

Learn how to set stones in a simple piece of jewellery using gemstones such as cubic zircona. You will learn several types of setting such as flush setting, rub over setting, claw setting and collet setting.

Name: Gemstone Setting Qualification title: Non regulated Community Learning provision, Crafts, Creative Arts and Design Qualification type: Assessment We will start with prototypes using copper and brass to enable students to gain confidence and develop their own designs at the outset before progressing to finished pieces created in semi-precious metals. Entry requirements

Sketchbook, pen/pencil, rag, own tools if available and a protective overall or apron. Saw blades can be purchased from the tutor. Students will need to purchase their own hand tools and the tutor will advise what they will need to buy to enable them to fully participate in the course. As above however after 2-3 months many students buy a few basic tools/books of their own. The course tutor will be able to give further advice as the course progresses. Students will need to purchase basic consumable items such as saw blades and drill bits as and when needed. Semi-precious and precious gemstones and metal will also need to be purchased.
