Film Studies - Introduction to Script Reading and Reporting

The aim of this course is to develop skills around how to read scripts and write analytical reports on them. Within the film and media industry, the number of scripts and ideas being written is rising exponentially. Consequently there is an ever-growing need to be able to weed out the good ideas from the bad. This course will take you through the process of learning the workings of a story in script form and be able to critically evaluate it in terms of structure, character, setting, plot, dialogue, action and theme. The second part of the course will then look at how to write a script report for industry. You will write actual reports and have these evaluated as part of the course so as to build a portfolio to get work. By the end of the course wil be able to: Write a script report, Comment on aspects of structure, character, setting, dialogue and action, Read scripts critically and understand what is working and what is not, Have critical discussions about screenplay and story structure. Beginners and those with more experience are welcome. New students may join at any time. It is important to note that this course is practical and requires periods of solitary writing, critical feedback and group work and formal pitching. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another adult please ask the Programme manager.
