Drawing and Painting - Beginners and Improvers

Discover the fundamental skills of drawing and painting or improve your existing skills and knowledge with this structured and thorough course. We will move from drawing to painting in step-by-step practical sessions investigating core skills, new ideas and approaches. We will work with different kinds of subject matter and look at a variety of artists from different cultures and periods including contemporary painters. Returning students from the previous term's course will continue to develop their skills and learn new techniques. By the end of this course, you should be able to: Draw and paint more effectively from observation, Make drawings using line and tone, Lay out a palette and mix up colours successfully, Demonstrate an understanding of composition, Gain more confidence in analysing the work of other artists, Develop your ability to evaluate your own work, There is no set 'homework', but you are welcome to practise and do further work at home. There is no qualification for this course. This mixed level course is suitable for beginners and those with a little experience.

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. Please do not buy anything especially for the course before it starts, but bring along to the first session anything you have already that you think will be useful, e.g. hard and soft pencils (perhaps H, B, 2B, 6B) and a sketchbook.
