Jewellery - Metal Clay

Students will be introduced to the craft of handmade jewellery making using a variety of mixed media techniques and materials. Materials may include glass beads, wire, plastic, polymer clay and various metals and foils. This course uses hand tools and basic forming techniques and does not include soldering. In the initial weeks the tutor will demonstrate basic techniques related to the materials such as: wire manipulation to create simple shapes, polymer clay techniques and progression onto producing a fine silver pendant using art clay towards the end of the course. Students wishing to create original handmade jewellery using a variety of techniques and materials. It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please ask to speak to the Programme Manager before you enrol.

Entry requirements

Please bring on the day: a sketchbook and pencil. Do not buy anything especially for the course before the first session as all materials are provided for the initial session. However, please bring along anything you already have that you think would be useful. For example, you can bring your own hand tools and materials such as jewellery wire and beads if desired. The tutor can advise on which tools and further materials would be beneficial and where to buy them locally and online. Additional costs, i.e. PMC, silver wire will depend on your chosen project: precious metal clay costs from £16.25. If you have any beads you may like to bring them to class and use them in your completed piece. Cubic zirconias can be purchased from the tutor to add to the clay before firing.
