Jewellery - Metal Clay

UPDATED 20150720 10:36:11

This course is for all skill levels, and will cover the creation of pendants, charms and earrings using this fascinating and amazing precious metal material. Silver clay refers to both Precious Metal Clay (PMC) and Art clay. It consists of microscopic silver particles mixed with an organic binder and water. This is an extremely versatile, pliable material which can be shaped by hand, moulded, extruded and painted on another surface. It can be easily textured - taking on extremely fine definition, and fired with stones, glass, enamels and ceramics. Once dried (at which point silver clay can also be sanded and carved) it is fired by hand-held torch or kiln. Firing burns off the binder and fuses together the silver particles', so silver clay shrinks when fired, between about 10-30% depending on the product used, but it can be fired many times. Almost magically, firing the piece turns it into Fine Silver! This is a project-based course covering several silver clay techniques. the course covers: silver clay properties and handling; shaping; forming; texturing; drilling; simple setting of lab-related stone (Cubic Zirconia); bail-making; firing (torch and kiln) finishing. By the end of the course you should have developed your understanding of the principles of making jewellery from silver clay. Students of all abilities are welcome; no craft experience is needed except good hand dexterity and enthusiasm to make your own jewellery using this exciting product. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please ask to speak with the Programme Manager before you enrol.
