Sewing - The Basics

We will start at the beginning by learning how to make a seam, then how to neaten the seam using different methods. You will learn about hand and machine hemmimg for different types of projects, how to insert an invisible zip, machine a buttonhole, sew a dart and to bind a neck edge or armhole. You will start to understand dress patterns through learning about the various symbols on the pattern, correct sizing and fitting of patterns. By the end of the day, you will have basic knowledge and understanding of patterns, sizing and simple sewing for all types of projects. The size of the group will be small to enable lots of individual guidance. This course is for anyone who wants to learn how to sew using modern sewing methods, is new to sewing or just wants learn how to do things correctly.

Entry requirements

Please bring your sewing machine and power lead, and all the attachments your machine has. Also bring your basic sewing kit: scissors, pins, thread, etc. All other materials will be provided. Sewing machines are available for you to use at the Centre, but it is best that you get used to your own machine.
