Soft Furnishings

On this practical soft furnishing course you can choose what you would like to make from a selection of projects: lampshades (drum and bell), cushion covers (zipped, piped, envelope-style), curtains, blinds and basic quilting. You will learn at your own pace using a combination of hand and machine sewing. You will learn about suitable fabrics and how to calculate fabric amounts for your projects. By the end of the course, you will be able to: Measure and cut fabric accurately, Machine and hand stitch simple seams, Make a cushion cover, Have learned techniques relevant to your chosen projects, Be aware of and work to relevant health and safety guidelines. There is no set homework, but to get the most out of the course, you are welcome to do further work at home. There is no qualification for this course. This course is suitable for anyone who wants to learn how to make beautiful furnishings for their home. Beginners, with or without any prior sewing skills, are welcome.

Entry requirements

You will need to provide all your own materials for the things you make on this course. We will contact you about a week before the course starts to advise you what you need to bring along to the first session; we plan to start with a simple cushion cover. Please do not buy anything especially for this course before we have contacted you. You will need a basic sewing kit, including pins, needles, thread, sharp dressmaking scissors, small embroidery scissors, a tape measure, a stitch unpicker, a notebook and pen. During the first session, the tutor will discuss with you what you would like to make during the course and what you will need to buy.
