This 'Creative Writing Workshop' in Maidstone is designed to introduce readers to the five Christmas books with which Charles Dickens delighted his audiences between 1843 and 1848. Starting with the first and best known, 'A Christmas Carol', this workshop will examine the characters, plots, themes and settings of the books. It will also explore issues that influenced Dickens? writing, the lasting impact of his work and the various ways the books have been adapted over the years in print as well as for radio, TV, film or stage. If desired, the course will culminate in students composing their own contemporary Christmas story, a la Dickens. By the end of the course, students will have: Explored characters, plots and themes in Dickens's five Christmas Books, Discussed and analysed various adaptations of the books, Recognised the books? social, historical and literary significance, Students should also engage individually or collaboratively in the writing process. The course involves reading and note taking, and may also provide opportunities to write creatively. The course is designed to accommodate beginners with little or no previous experience but with an interest in Dicken's and Victorian Christmas stories.
