Learn to design and produce sculpture in clay, using a variety of techniques and processes. The course will introduce the formal language of sculpture - form, mass, weight, scale, balance; and how these elements can inform your own ideas and outcomes. Working predominantly with clay, you will be taught the basic methods of 3D construction. Students with some previous experience will be encouraged to develop and realise their own ideas using appropriate materials. Every effort will be made to encourage and support students own project ambitions; however, there will be some restrictions on the processes available and the possible scale of the work. By the end of this course you should be able to: Research and develop ideas for making sculpture. Select and use a range of sculptural techniques and processes. Produce sculptures that are informed by an understanding of the formal elements. Demonstrate a broader awareness of the history and context of sculpture. Work to health and safety guidelines. Beginners and those with experience.It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.

Students have to cover the cost of their own materials and are generally able to purchase these through the centre. The cost will vary according to the scale of the work produced, but the tutor will advise on the approximate costs of each project. Please bring any materials and equipment you have that might be appropriate to the course. All students should bring a sketchbook of at least A4 size, preferably with a hard cover, ring bound and containing good quality cartridge paper and a selection of pencils to the first class.
