This is a one year intensive course leading to a GCSE English qualification, with the examining body AQA. The syllabus covers three units: Unit 1 - Understanding and Producing Non-fiction Texts, includes reading and understanding a range of non-fiction texts, identifying the writers' craft and transferring these skills into your own writing for a range of genres, audiences and purposes. Unit 2 - Speaking and Listening includes presenting and listening to information and ideas; responding to the questions and views of others; adapting presentation appropriately to context and audience; using creative approaches to explore questions, solve problems and develop ideas; participating in a range of contexts, including real life uses of talk and audiences beyond the classroom. Unit 3 - Understanding and Producing Creative Texts, includes study of a play by Shakespeare, a text from the English Literary Heritage and a text from a different culture or tradition. This work will cover prose, poetry and drama. The course is assessed via a 2 and 1/4 hour written examination taking place in May/early June 2015 that accounts for a maximum of 80 marks, 40% of the total marks available. The remainder of the marks are gained through on-course tutor controlled assessments. Further information regarding the course specification can be obtained from AQA's website at www.aqa.org.uk. PLEASE NOTE that regular attendance, a high level of committment and approximately 2 hours of home study is a requirement from you, enrolling on this course.
