History - Latin for Historians and Family Researchers

UPDATED 20150720 09:50:25

Many of us didn?t study Latin at school and may now be regretting it, particularly if we study history and family history. However, with a little knowledge of the language we can understand a great deal. The course seeks to enable students to understand the basic format and some of the content of Latin inscriptions and mottos. We will study how inscriptions developed over time from the late medieval period to the early 20th century and will study the basic Latin vocabulary and grammar needed to be able to read them. Students can also bring their own examples to study and decipher in class. The course is designed to be of use to beginners with an interest in deciphering Latin inscriptions and mottos found in historical buildings.
