Intro to Data Security, Recovery & Digital Forensics

Increasingly we depend on digital services and need to protect our information from being maliciously disrupted or misused. This introductory course will firstly cover on line security and help you understand how to protect your digital life, whether at home or work. You will learn how to recognise the threats that could harm you on line and the steps you take to reduce the chances that they will happen to you. Cyber crime is rising, which means that a computing forensics and security specialists are increasingly valued by government, law enforcement agencies and businesses. With cyber security often in the news today, the course will also frame your on line safety in the context of the wider world, introducing you to different types of malware, including viruses and Trojans, as well as concepts such as network security, cryptography, identity theft and risk management. Also on the course you will learn how to recover lost data using a variety of open source tools and in addition the course covers an introductory understanding of computer forensics from understanding file systems and typical file locations to creating images of hard drives and interrogating content without interfering with the original data.
