The course will explore these three versatile water based painting media through a variety of approaches. These will be designed to give students an understanding of their material properties, as well as their expressive possibilities. Students will receive advice on methods and materials through studio work and through reference to examples of other artists' work. Studio work will be centred on projects; these will be based around the established painting genres of still life, landscape, history and the figure, although approaches to these genres need not be limited to the conventional ones. Occasional visits to exhibitions will supplement studio practice. Little previous experience of painting is required although some drawing experience would be an advantage. Whilst one aim of the course will be to foster an understanding of the practical possibilities of water based media, their use in a creative and expressive way will be of the foremost importance.
