This course is broadly based course and aims to cover the main elements of drawing and painting that will develop the students knowledge and skills of the subject which will allow the students to continue to develop their own work. The course will lay emphasis on developing sound drawing skills and the first project will be still life based. We will be concerned with how represent three-dimensional forms in a two-dimensional medium by the use of tone, line, light and shade and we will study basic perspective. Also within the still life project we will move on to using different types of paint such as watercolour, acrylic, pastel and oil paint. In the first term will study colour theory with practical exercises and we will look at the history of colour theory and the development of colours and paints throughout history and it's relevance to the history of art. We will look the different types of paints, how they are made and how they differ and also the appropriate supports which each paint type require. In the second half of the first term we will study the figure. We will look at anatomy from the artist's point of view and study the structure of the human body. We will look at the drawings of the 'Masters' and draw from the live model. In the spring term we will develop paintings of the figure and also paint figures in an environment. This term we will also draw and paint flowers. The summer term allows us to draw and paint outdoors and use this term to study the art of the landscape. Reference to landscape in the history of art will be most important, looking at the work of the great English landscape painters. Throughout the course students are encouraged to develop their own particular style and approach to art.
