Apprenticeships are practical hands on programmes designed to provide you with relevant, practical training, which will enable you to progress within your chosen industry. As an apprentice you will be paid a minimum of £2.68 an hour if you are under 19 or over 19 and still in the first year of your apprenticeship programme. You will be employed between 30 and 40 hours a week. If you like making things and enjoy working with wood, this could be an ideal apprenticeship for you. Carpenters and joiners make and install wooden fixtures and fittings as part of construction projects. To become a carpenter or joiner you will need to have an eye for detail. You will also need good maths skills for measuring and working out angles. A Site Joiner will cut and shape timber for floorboards, skirting boards, window frames, make and assemble doors, staircases, roof joists, roof timbers, partition walls,etc for shops, hotels, banks, offices and public buildings as well as construction sites.
