UPDATED 20150723 08:31:32

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Who is the course for? The course is for learners who do not speak English as their first language. This is a course for people who wish to learn or improve their English. What can I expect to learn? This course is based on the Skills for Life ESOL Curriculum. Prior to the course you will have a confidential interview and assessment to ensure that the course is suitable for you. Once you join a course you will develop a learning plan with your tutor. The course includes reading, writing, speaking and listening. Many of our courses offer the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification in ESOL. How will I learn? The course is classroom based and will be a mix of taught activities, individual work and group work. There will be regular reading, writing and speaking and listening activities. There will be homework every week. How will I know how well I am doing? The tutor will help you to recognise how well you are doing and what you need to do to improve. This will include developing your own learning plan. If you think that you may need extra help with your learning, please ask your tutor or the centre staff. Will I have to do any work outside of the sessions? You may be given tasks or activities to complete or practice between taught sessions. Your tutor will give guidance at the first session. What will I need to provide? Bring along a pen or pencil and paper. A bi-lingual dictionary is useful. Will there be any other costs? (e.g. materials, books, registration with a professional body, etc.) You may be provided with a reading list to support your learning. The tuition costs of this course are covered in the advertised course fee. There may be an additional examination fee. What can I do next? You may want to progress on to a higher level ESOL course, English Functional Skills or English GCSE. Discuss your next steps with your tutor or the Centre staff.
