E363 - The course is certificated by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) in line with the Qualifications and Credit Framework. The course runs for a full academic year, one 3 hour session per week. Class time is made up of small and large group discussions, simulated group training supervision and tutor input. Weekly sessions in class will cover the further development of counselling skills; introduce students to a number of counselling theories and models; the development of professional and ethical awareness the development of awareness of group supervision; practical skills development in role play. The course will concentrate on developing students understanding of counselling theory and professional ethics by following seven units of study which are based on the process in the CPCAB model: The professional framework of the counsellor. The counselling relationship. Client diversity. The service user-centred approach. Personal awareness in counselling. Counselling concepts and skills. Supervision and self-reflection. Each unit has a learning outcome and assessment criteria which needs to be met in order for candidates to successfully complete the course. To evidence learning and the criteria, students are required to produce a weekly journal; at least one self-review; an audio tape of skills practice plus a written evaluation; a 10 minute presentation to the class following a visit to Counselling Service or Agency and a written evaluation; they will need to give and receive feedback on skills practice sessions and to complete an External Assessment set by the exam board. To pass the course both portfolio work and the External Assessment need to be marked as 'proficient' CPCAB say that successful candidates may progress on to their Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (TC-L4) - provided students also have CPCAB Certificate skills Level 2.
