ICT is one of those subjects that lets you maximise on your own strengths and engages the logical and creative parts of your personality. If you turn out to have a really technical interest in ICT, you could work to design systems which transfer information from a database to a terminal. But if you're more interested in user interface, you could work in web design, advertising or for a handset manufacturer. ICT will help you develop essential transferable skills, including how to: - assemble data and assess its quality - investigate facts and use deduction - put over your point of view fluently - work as a team to achieve results The ICT course is a combination of theory and practice using different application software. You will use computers to develop and apply your skills to software projects, as well as carrying out individual research, group work activities, presentations and exam practice. Your teacher will help you to develop a broad range of IT knowledge, skills and understanding by using a variety of teaching methods and lots of helpful resources which will all be available both in your classroom and online. In the first year you will study two themes: - Practical problem solving - introduces the various hardware and software technologies used in ICT, and how you can apply them to different applications. - Living in the digital world - the wider picture of the use of ICT and the basic terms and concepts involved in the study of the subject, and an awareness of the numerous issues arising from the use of ICT for individuals, society and organisations. In the second year you'll build on your strong AS foundation topics with another two study themes: - The use of ICT in the digital world - covers technology developments, how to manage ICT projects, and the use of ICT solutions within organisations. - Practical issues - provides hands-on experience by conceiving, designing and implementing a real ICT-related system.
Name: GCE A Level in Information and Communication Technology Qualification title: GCE A Level in Information and Communication Technology Qualification type: Assessment The course is 100% examined in the first year. You'll sit two papers, one on each of the themes you've studied in your AS. Each paper accounts for 50% of your marks for the year. For the 'Practical problem solving' paper you will be required to submit pieces of coursework that you have been working on in class and answer questions based on them. In the second year your practical coursework project for the 'Practical Issues' unit is worth 40%. You'll have just one paper to sit for 'The use of ICT in the digital world' unit. This lasts for two hours and accounts for 60% of your marks for the year. The first section of this paper will be based on a scenario that you will have time to study prior to the exam.
