You will develop ideas by researching into other artists and be encouraged to examine the world around you visually. You will work through a variety of techniques and learn to work with appropriate media, materials and processes and you will need to write about your work, to express personal, creative ideas and produce final outcomes using a range of approaches and methods. A Level Graphic Design (visual communications) is a two year course which will introduce you to the fundamentals of design principles and visual communication giving you a strong foundation of skills. You will also be given the freedom to explore and experiment with a wider range of traditional and digital techniques and processes. You are encouraged to explore a range of disciplines such as illustration, typography, advertising, packaging, branding, editorial design, book covers, animation and web design. You will learn and develop a variety of techniques within drawing, illustration, typography, laser cutting, print making, collage, textiles and photography. The graphics classrooms are well equipped with a range of materials and equipment; there is a computer for each student including industry standard software with the latest Adobe Creative Suite, which you will be taught on the course. You will be introduced to contemporary and historical artists, illustrators and designers. You will develop a strong foundation of skills in visual communication early on including illustration, typography, layout skills and idea generation techniques. You will follow the design process and learn how to generate ideas and problem solve. You will learn to produce successful, professional and imaginative outcomes in response to both set and self-initiated project briefs and as your skills develop you will have more freedom to explore your own interests in Graphic Design.
