This course is for students who are dedicated and passionate musicians. They should enjoy performing, composing and analysing music. They must be able to play a musical instrument or voice to a high standard (ideally grade 4 standard or above). Students will need to analyse a wide range of musical styles with a particular focus on western classical music. Being confident in reading music notation is a requirement for accessing A level Music. A Level music is split into 3 components with students developing a well rounded musician. Component 1 – Appraising Music (40%) Appraising music is a 2 hour examination at the end of the 2 year course. Students will develop an understanding a wide range of musical styles including western classical music. They will study set works, reading notation and scores to analyse the intentions of the composer and the effect on the audience. Students will also study unfamiliar works and students must be able to use vocabulary appropriate to the given style. Students will be required to write essays on historical context and musical analyse of set studied works. Component 2 – Performance Music (35%) Performance has to be completed between March and May in the final year of completion. Students must be able to perform music using one or both of the following ways: • Instrumental/vocal: as a soloist, and/or as part of an ensemble • Production: via music technology Students must perform for a minimum of 10 minutes. Component 3 – Composition (25%) Students will learn how to develop musical ideas, including extending and manipulating musical ideas through 2 compositions. One composition will be from an externally set brief and the other a free composition. Composition must last a minimum of 4 and half minutes.
